My Doggie Weed is a 100% pure organic seaweed product from Norway called Ascophyllum nodosum (AN). My Doggie Weed is not heat treated or irradiated in its country of origin being Norway or when it is distributed here in Australia. Our Doggie Weed has been tested for heavy metals and comes in at the safe level, a report can be obtained on request.
AN may slow the progression of periodontal disease, reduce plaque and calculus, you can read more in this 2018 placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized 90-day study in dogs.
100% Organic Ascophyllum nodosum (AN)
0.06mg/100g as independently tested. If you are using AN from another supplier, the iodine level may differ due to naturally occurring levels in the environment it is harvested from.
Suggestion on how to include in your dogs diet:
Mix with your dog's food, if your dog needs encouragement, you can mix it with wet food such as raw meat, sardines, kefir, yogurt etc. My Doggie Weed may be frozen but if you're cooking your dogs meals, do not cook My Doggie Weed.
My Doggie Weed contains 620mcg/g | 0.062g/100g | 62mg/100g of natural iodine. Dogs with medically diagnosed Thyroid conditions should not take this product unless under the supervision of a Vet, a typical nutritional analysis can be forwarded to your Vet on request.
Safe levels of Iodine
There are no studies which have tested the maximum dosage of naturally occurring iodine in dogs. Scientists of the above-mentioned study assumed that, in dogs with normal thyroid function characterized by normal levels of thyroxine in serum, the amounts of iodine used in the study which their dosage rates were based on would not induce any adverse effects. This conclusion was based on a study demonstrating that no toxic effects occurred when alga was included in the diet at concentrations of up to 15% of AN. Based on this study you may be safely able to feed My Doggie Weed with other Seaweeds such as My Doggie King Island Kelp (33mg/100g) in apparently healthy dogs - please always check with your Vet before giving any new supplements to your dog.
One study that we find very encouraging given our passion for gut health is this 2018 study that showed that AN has potential uses as functional food components to improve human gut health.
Will this supplement work for your dog?
There is only one way to see - our supplements are affordable enough to give it a whirl and see if your dog will benefit positively like the successful dogs in the clinical trial/s. In some cases we have multiple supplements that have similar outcomes so you may like to try one for 3 months and then try another and see which one your dog responded to better.
Like any new food, some dogs with a sensitive stomach may display digestive upset, if this is the case, cease until their tummies are happy again and then introduce again at 1/4 of the rate and slowly increase from there.
